Express Session Prolog You completed your Express Demo and now it is the morning after. You had enough time to listen to your record a few times on a couple of different stereo systems and the sonic stubble and warts are more obvious than they were in the rush at the studio. Now what can you do? Obviously we can remix the album with fresh ears. This is only possible if we have your tracks in the studio, which may not be the case for to long after you leave unless you make arrangements to back the individual tracks up. If the tracks are still in the PC we can do the same type of mixdown we did at the conclusion of the recording session, and you can expect much more from the mix when there is some time between the performance and the mix.
1) Track bleed Clean Up.
a) On the drums as is typical,
drummers only hit the toms once in a while. We pull out all the bleed from
those two mics except when the drums are struck..
b) Pull out all the bleed in the
vocal tracks except when there is singing going on. This improves the clarity
of the mix immensely.
2) Vocal Enhancement
a) Put lead vocal through a
compressor and EQ all of the vocals to make them stand out a little more.
b) Adjust timing on chorus to give a
better feel if required
c) in some places it may sound better just
leaving one background vocal active instead of all of them.
d) rebalance the entire vocal sub mix.
e) Auto tune the vocal(s)
3) Instrument Enhancement.
a) perhaps duplicate an instrument
track and delay the duplicate track then EQ both tracks a little
different and pan them into the mix so they stand out in the mix a lot more.
b) perhaps add some delay or chorus
effects
c) Adjust the volume throughout the song
on all instruments, for consistency and make solo's more proud in the
mix.
d) Run instruments through a
compressor to make up for volume inconsistency
e) I sometimes like to run the bass and
kick drum through a compressor together so the kick jumps out more without
having to be so loud to overcome the bass which shares frequency spectrum with
it.
4) Mastering
When the song was complete and mixed down
we can run the two track through compression, limiting and a little EQ.
This will allow the level to increase by about 6-10dB without totally trashing
the quality of the mix.
